Oxytocin is a hormone and a neurotransmitter that is involved in childbirth and breast feeding. Human Oxytocin stimulates uterine smooth muscle contractions and stimulates the mammary glands to increase lactation without increasing the production of milk.
Applications
Oxytocin is a synthetic form of the peptide hormone produced by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland. It has significant uterotonic, labor-inducing, and lactation-promoting effects.
Oxytocin primarily stimulates the myometrium, especially during late pregnancy, labor, and delivery. It enhances the permeability of cell membranes to calcium ions (Ca²⁺), lowers the resting membrane potential, and increases cellular excitability. This reduction in membrane potential leads to stronger, more frequent, and longer-lasting uterine contractions.
At lower doses, oxytocin increases both the frequency and intensity of uterine contractions, while higher doses or repeated administration further intensify uterine tone, leading to even stronger contractions, which may progress to tetanic contractions. Additionally, oxytocin causes contraction of myoepithelial cells around the mammary gland's alveoli, promoting milk flow into larger ducts or sinuses, thereby facilitating milk ejection.
Oxytocin has little to no vasoconstrictive or antidiuretic effects unless administered in very high doses. It also does not induce contraction of the bladder or intestinal muscles.
