Applications
Just like Oxytocin, Carbetocin is able to bind to the hormone-producing receptors of uterine smooth muscle, and further, to cause to the contraction of the uterus rhythmically. On the basis of the uterus' original contraction, Carbetocin can increase its frequency as well as increase the uterine tension.
In the non-pregnant state, the Oxytocin receptor content of the uterus is very low, which will be increased during pregnancy, and reaches a peak at delivery.
Which is to say, Carbetocin has no effect on the non-pregnant uterus, but has an effective uterine contractile effect on the pregnant uterus and the uterus after giving birth.
It is mainly used for selective epidural or spinal anesthesia after cesarean section, in order to prevent uterine atony and postpartum hemorrhage.
