Pharmacological Action

Selectively stimulates the uterus and enhances contraction of uterine smooth muscle. The stimulatory effect on uterine smooth muscle varies depending on dosage and hormone levels in the body. Small doses increase the rhythmic contractions of the uterine muscle in late pregnancy, with uniform contraction and relaxation. Large doses can cause tonic contraction of uterine smooth muscle, compressing blood vessels within the myometrium to produce a hemostatic effect. In addition, oxytocin promotes contraction of myoepithelial cells surrounding the mammary alveoli and ducts, facilitating milk ejection.

Dosage and Administration

Subcutaneous or intramuscular injection: Single dose - horses and cattle 3–10 ml; sheep and pigs 1–5 ml; dogs 0.2–1 ml.

Actions and Indications

Uterotonic agent. Used for induction of labor, postpartum uterine hemorrhage, and retained placenta.

Adverse Reactions

No adverse reactions have been observed when used at the recommended dosage.
