Sarolaner is an isoxazoline compound that is mainly used in the control of animal parasites, especially in dogs and cats and other pets. It inhibits γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate receptors in the parasite's nervous system, leading to an increase in the parasite's neuroexcitability and ultimately paralysis and death. Sarolaner is highly effective against a wide range of ectoparasites such as fleas, ticks, mites, etc., and also has a certain degree of efficacy in the control of certain internal parasites such as Ascaris lumbricoides.
In dogs, Sarolaner is commonly used to treat and prevent flea infestations (e.g. Ctenocephalides felis) and tick infestations (e.g. Rhipicephalus sanguineus). It kills parasites rapidly, usually starting to work within hours of administration, and continues to provide protection for up to a month. In addition, Sarolaner is also effective against mite infections (e.g. canine scabies mite Sarcoptes scabiei), relieving itching and inflammation of the skin caused by mite infections.
